External warning 4
ABB · ACS880
What does A984 mean?
A fault has occurred in an external device connected to the drive's external event input 4. This general warning indicates an issue with peripheral equipment that the drive is monitoring. The drive continues to operate, but the external device needs attention.
Common Causes
- A safety gate or emergency stop device connected to digital input DI4 has been activated.
- An external limit switch for mechanical travel connected to DI4 has been reached or has faulted.
- The power supply for an external sensor providing input to DI4 has failed, causing its signal to drop.
- Incorrect configuration of parameter P5-04 (DI4 function), causing the drive to misinterpret a normal state as a warning.
Repair Steps & Checklist
Click steps to track your progress.
- 1
Identify the external device connected to drive digital input DI4 (via parameter P5-04 'DI4 function').
- 2
Inspect the external device's state (e.g., limit switch position, E-stop button status) and ensure it is in its normal operating condition.
- 3
Verify the voltage at drive terminal DI4. An unexpected voltage (e.g., 0VDC when 24VDC is expected) indicates an issue.
- 4
Check parameter P5-04 (DI4 function) to ensure the logical sense (normally open/closed) matches the external device's output.
