A983

External warning 3

ABB · ACS880

What does A983 mean?

A fault has occurred in an external device connected to the drive's external event input 3. This general warning indicates an issue with peripheral equipment that the drive is monitoring. The drive continues to operate, but the external device needs attention.

Common Causes

  • An external pressure switch or flow switch connected to digital input DI3 has detected an abnormal process condition.
  • The drive's auxiliary fan or an external cooling system monitored by DI3 has reported a fault condition.
  • A security or access control sensor connected to DI3 has been triggered, sending an alert signal.
  • Intermittent signal loss due to vibration affecting the connection to drive terminal DI3 or the external sensor.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Identify the external device connected to drive digital input DI3 (via parameter P5-03 'DI3 function').

  2. 2

At the external device, confirm its current status (e.g., pressure gauge reading, flow indicator).

  3. 3

Measure the voltage at drive terminal DI3. If the input is configured as active high, it should be 24VDC in normal state.

  4. 4

Visually inspect the cable jacket and terminations for the wire connected to drive terminal DI3 for any signs of wear or improper seating.
