External warning 1
ABB · ACS880
What does A981 mean?
A fault has occurred in an external device connected to the drive's external event input 1. This general warning indicates an issue with peripheral equipment that the drive is monitoring. The drive continues to operate, but the external device needs attention.
Common Causes
- External safety interlock switch (e.g., guard door, E-stop button) connected to digital input DI1 has opened its contact.
- Auxiliary contact from an external motor starter or circuit breaker connected to DI1 has opened, indicating a fault on that device.
- Process over-limit switch (e.g., high-pressure, high-temperature) connected to DI1 has tripped, sending a warning signal.
- Control wiring fault causing an unintended open circuit on the signal path from the external device to drive terminal DI1.
Repair Steps & Checklist
Click steps to track your progress.
- 1
Identify the external device connected to drive digital input DI1 (via parameter P5-01 'DI1 function').
- 2
Measure the voltage at drive terminal DI1. If configured as active low, confirm 0VDC; if active high, confirm 24VDC (or configured voltage).
- 3
At the external device identified, verify its operational status and output contact state (e.g., check E-stop button position).
- 4
Inspect the wiring between the external device's output contact and drive terminal DI1 for continuity and secure connections.
