13.2

Unknown Encoder Type (Encoder 1)

SEW Eurodrive · MOVIDRIVE system

What does 13.2 mean?

The connected Encoder 1 type is not recognized or supported by the inverter's firmware. This prevents the drive from correctly interpreting encoder signals, leading to non-functional position or speed feedback. Continued operation without proper encoder recognition is impossible.

Common Causes

  • Encoder connected is not listed in the drive's supported encoder list (firmware limitation).
  • Incorrect encoder type selected in the drive's configuration parameters (e.g., P7-00 set to wrong encoder type).
  • Firmware version of the drive is outdated and does not support newer encoder models.
  • Faulty encoder ID chip or internal memory preventing proper identification by the drive during initialization.
  • Damaged data lines or communication issues preventing the drive from reading the encoder's identity information.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Verify the actual encoder model number against the drive's technical manual for supported encoder types.

  2. 2

Check the encoder type selection parameter (P7-00 or similar) in the drive and ensure it matches the connected encoder.

  3. 3

Attempt to update the drive's firmware to the latest version, which might include support for more encoder types.

  4. 4

Inspect the encoder communication cable for continuity on all data lines and shield using a multimeter.

  5. 5

Connect a known compatible encoder (if available) to the drive to rule out a defective encoder unit.
