Internal fan fault
Danfoss · VLT HVAC Drive High Power
What does 23 mean?
This warning indicates that the frequency converter's internal fan is either not running or not properly detected, as monitored by an internal protective function. This can lead to insufficient cooling of the drive's internal components, risking overheating and potential damage. The fan monitor can be disabled via parameter 14-53 (Fan Monitor) if necessary for specific testing, but typically should remain active for protection.
Common Causes
- Internal cooling fan motor failure (e.g., bearings seized, winding open circuit).
- Fan power supply voltage drop or failure (e.g., internal 24VDC supply).
- Accumulation of dust and debris on fan blades, hindering rotation.
- Faulty fan speed detection circuit on the control board.
- Loose or disconnected fan power or feedback wiring within the frequency converter.
Repair Steps & Checklist
Click steps to track your progress.
- 1
Power down the frequency converter and lockout/tagout. Visually inspect the internal cooling fan blades for obstruction or damage.
- 2
With power applied and drive enabled, listen for fan operation or verify rotation (if visible and safe to do so).
- 3
Measure the voltage supplied to the internal fan at its connector (e.g., 24VDC or 48VDC) during operation.
- 4
Check for accumulation of dust and debris on the heat sink fins and fan blades, clean if necessary using compressed air.
- 5
If fan is not running and voltage is present, disconnect fan connector and measure fan motor winding resistance.
- 6
Verify the fan connector is securely seated on the control board or fan power board.
