5300

Control Panel Communication Loss

ABB · ACS560 Standard Control Program Firmware

What does 5300 mean?

The control panel, which was selected as the active control location for the drive, has ceased communicating. This fault means the drive has lost its primary human-machine interface, preventing local control and monitoring, and potentially causing unintended drive behavior based on selected fault functions.

Common Causes

  • Loose or corroded communication cable connection (e.g., RJ45, USB) between the drive and the control panel (HIM/HMI).
  • Control panel power supply failure (e.g., internal 5VDC rail fault, depleted backup battery) preventing communication transceiver operation.
  • Incorrect communication protocol or address settings configured in the drive's parameters (e.g., P0-01 Control Source, P0-02 Local Control Source).
  • Excessive electromagnetic interference (EMI) or high electrical noise disrupting the communication signal integrity on unshielded cable runs.
  • Firmware incompatibility between the drive and the control panel after a system update, requiring specific version matching.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

Verify the physical connection of the communication cable (e.g., RJ45, USB-B) at both the drive and the control panel; confirm latches are secure and cable is free of visible damage.

  2. 2

Measure the 5VDC supply voltage at the control panel communication port (e.g., between pins 1 and 2 of an RJ45 connector) using a multimeter to confirm adequate power delivery.

  3. 3

Access the drive's parameters via a secondary communication method (e.g., fieldbus, commissioning software) and confirm P0-01 (Control Source) and P0-02 (Local Control Source) are set correctly.

  4. 4

Inspect the communication cable for proper shielding and grounding. If unshielded, reroute away from power cables or replace with a properly shielded CAT5e/CAT6 cable.

  5. 5

Perform a complete power cycle of both the drive and the control panel by switching off the main supply breaker for a minimum of 30 seconds and then reapplying power.

  6. 6

Compare the firmware versions of the drive and the control panel. If a mismatch is identified after a recent update, consult the drive manual for compatible versions.
