Possible causes include an incorrectly connected encoder, overly short acceleration ramps, a P component of the positioning controller that is too small, incorrectly set speed controller parameters, a lag fault tolerance value that is too small, or mechanical binding in the system.

• The actual motor speed or position is lagging significantly behind the commanded value.
• Low motor torque or excessive load preventing speed following.
• PID controller tuning is inadequate for the application dynamics.
• Inaccurate feedback signal causing perceived lag.
