External warning 4
ABB · ACS580
What does A984 mean?
An external device configured as External Event 4 (parameters 31.07 and 31.08) has generated a warning. This indicates a potential issue with external equipment or sensors that should be investigated, though it may not cause an immediate drive trip. Addressing warnings proactively prevents escalation to faults.
Common Causes
- Reduced air pressure in a pneumatic system, activating a low-pressure switch connected to the drive's digital input (P31.07, P31.08).
- Excessive vibration detected by an external sensor, triggering a warning before critical levels are reached.
- Blockage in a cooling line or restricted airflow to an external motor, leading to its thermal switch outputting a pre-warning signal.
- Electrical noise on the signal cable from the external device, intermittently corrupting the input signal and causing spurious warnings.
Repair Steps & Checklist
Click steps to track your progress.
- 1
1. Determine which external equipment or sensor is linked to the digital input selected by P31.07 (External Event 4 source).
- 2
2. Use a multimeter to verify the signal status at the drive's digital input terminal associated with P31.07.
- 3
3. Inspect the external system (e.g., pneumatic system, cooling system, machinery) for the condition indicated by the warning.
- 4
4. Review P31.07 (External Event 4 source) and P31.08 (External Event 4 action) to ensure the drive's expected behavior for this external warning is correctly configured.
- 5
5. Check the shielding and grounding of the signal cable from the external device to the drive to minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI).
