9081

External fault 1

ABB · ACS580

What does 9081 mean?

An external device configured as External Event 1 (parameters 31.01 and 31.02) has generated a fault. This indicates a problem with equipment or sensors outside the drive's direct control, potentially impacting the entire system's operation and requiring immediate attention.

Common Causes

  • Digital input configured as External Event 1 (P31.02) losing its expected state (e.g., opening a normally closed contact).
  • External safety device (e.g., emergency stop, guard interlock, thermal overload relay) tripping and sending a fault signal to the drive.
  • Failure of an auxiliary contact on a motor starter or overload relay, opening the drive's fault input circuit.
  • Loose or broken wiring connection for the digital input linked to P31.02, leading to an incorrect state (e.g., open circuit).
  • Incorrect parameter setting for P31.02 (DI Config) causing the drive to misinterpret the input state (e.g., expecting N.O. when N.C. is connected).

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

    1. Identify the digital input terminal (e.g., DI1, DI2) configured as External Event 1 in P31.02 (DI Config).

  2. 2

    2. Measure the voltage at the identified digital input terminal relative to common (e.g., 24VDC or 0VDC) to confirm its current state.

  3. 3

    3. Inspect the external device (e.g., E-stop button, thermal overload contact) connected to this input for proper operation and reset if tripped.

  4. 4

    4. Verify the integrity of the wiring from the external device to the drive's digital input terminal, checking for opens or shorts using a multimeter.

  5. 5

    5. Review P31.02 (DI Config) to ensure the input polarity (e.g., Normally Open or Normally Closed) is correctly configured for the external device.
