Earth leakage

ABB · ACS580

What does 2330 mean?

An earth (ground) fault or significant current unbalance has been detected in the motor circuit, specifically within the motor itself or its connecting cables. This is a critical safety hazard and can cause severe damage to equipment or pose a risk of electric shock.

Common Causes

  • Insulation breakdown in motor winding or motor cable due to age, moisture ingress, or mechanical abrasion, causing current to flow to ground.
  • Water or conductive contamination inside the motor terminal box or drive output compartment, creating a low-resistance path to ground.
  • Incorrect motor cable shielding termination, allowing induced currents to flow through the ground path.
  • Damage to the motor cable conduit or glands compromising earth continuity and allowing leakage.
  • Faulty motor bearing (e.g., current discharge through bearings) causing high frequency leakage current.

Repair Steps & Checklist

Click steps to track your progress.

  1. 1

De-energize the drive. Disconnect the motor cable from the drive output terminals (U, V, W, PE).

  2. 2

Measure insulation resistance of each motor cable conductor to ground (PE) and between conductors using a megohmmeter (1000V).

  3. 3

Measure insulation resistance of each motor winding to ground (motor frame) and between phases using a megohmmeter (1000V).

  4. 4

Visually inspect the motor terminal box, motor cable glands, and cable routing for signs of moisture, damage, or contamination.

  5. 5

Verify the integrity of the motor frame grounding connection to the central earthing point.
