PROFIsafe Communication Error
ABB · AC500
What does 16148 mean?
This error signifies a disruption or malfunction in the PROFIsafe communication between the safety CPU and the I/O module. This can be caused by network issues, incorrect addressing, or a faulty communication interface on the module, leading to a loss of safe data exchange.
Common Causes
- Physical damage or disconnection of the PROFIBUS DP or PROFINET IO communication cable.
- Incorrect PROFIBUS/PROFINET network address (Device Address or IP Address) configured for the safety I/O module.
- Malfunctioning bus connector or cable shielding, leading to signal degradation and data corruption.
- Interference from electromagnetic sources degrading the communication signal integrity.
- Faulty PROFIBUS/PROFINET communication interface on either the safety CPU or the safety I/O module.
Repair Steps & Checklist
Click steps to track your progress.
- 1
1. Verify the secure connection and physical integrity of the PROFIBUS/PROFINET communication cable to the safety I/O module.
- 2
2. Confirm that the PROFIBUS DP address (set by DIP switches or software) or PROFINET IP address matches the safety CPU configuration.
- 3
3. Check the bus termination resistors at the start and end of PROFIBUS segments or verify PROFINET cable categories (e.g., CAT5e or CAT6).
- 4
4. Use a network diagnostic tool (e.g., PROFIBUS Tester) to analyze bus telegrams for errors, retransmissions, or signal quality issues.
- 5
5. Temporarily replace the safety I/O module with a known good spare to isolate if the module's communication interface is faulty.
